Wester Forret Farmhouse

An earlier or mid 19th century, two-storey, three-bay farmhouse is situated with a steading to its north. The farmhouse is built of squared and snecked rubble, with eight-pane sash windows to the south elevation, a central panelled door with a fanlight above, straight skews, corniced end stacks, and a slate roof. To the north of the farmhouse are two low, parallel wings. One wing has a segmental-arched cart opening, now a window, while the other has an altered, large lintelled entrance. The steading may incorporate some earlier fabric and is composed of two principal blocks. One is L-plan, partly enclosing a rectangular block of four parallel ranges and with an L-plan courtyard between, partially roofed with a modern structure to the west. The steading is single-storey with lofts and is rubble-built with ashlar dressings. The L-plan block features six arcaded, segmental-headed cart openings on the courtyard elevation of the north wing, a loft door, and six square boarded loft openings above. The east wing has six bays to the courtyard, two low bays to the right, a segmental-headed pend (a broader arch to the courtyard) to the left, a door between the pend and a window, flanked by further windows, and three square loft openings. Blocked openings are present to the outer walls. The rectangular parallel ranges have some large, altered lintelled openings to the south and east elevations. The buildings are roofed with pantiles, mostly piended.
