Description
Dating from the earlier or mid 19th century, Wester Forret consists of a two-storey, three-bay farmhouse and a substantial adjoining steading to the north. The farmhouse is built of squared and snecked rubble with a central panelled door topped with a fanlight, and eight-pane sash windows to the south elevation. It has straight skews, corniced end stacks, and a slate roof.
To the north of the farmhouse is a steading that may incorporate some earlier fabric. It is composed of two principal blocks; one in an L-shape, partly enclosing a rectangular block of four parallel ranges, and with an L-shaped courtyard between. A significant portion of the courtyard is now covered with a modern roof. The L-shaped block is single-storey with lofts and is built of rubble with ashlar dressings. The north wing of the L-shaped block features six arcaded, segmental-headed cart openings facing the courtyard, along with a loft door and six square boarded loft openings above. The east wing has six bays facing the courtyard, two low bays on the right, a segmental-headed pend (a broader arch leading to the courtyard) on the left, a door between the pend and a window, and three square loft openings. Blocked openings are present on the outer walls of this block. The rectangular parallel ranges have some large, altered lintelled openings to their south and east elevations. The roofs are largely pantile, and mostly piended.
