Description

Dour Cottage is an 18th-century house that has undergone alterations and additions in the 1970s. It is a two-storey, three-bay building with a rectangular plan and an extension at the rear, which is built into a gently sloping bank to the southeast. The exterior is rendered.

The southeast elevation is symmetrical, featuring a forestair that runs from the ground floor on the left to the first floor. There is an exposed moulded stone rail with modern metal railings added. The central door is located under the forestair landing, flanked by blind windows. Above, there is a central door on the first floor with large windows on either side. To the far right, there are remains of an advanced gable from a former adjacent two-storey house, which incorporates a castle gate wall.

The southwest elevation has a plain gable wall, with the extension set back to the left and featuring modern windows. The northeast elevation is partially visible, showing a plain gable wall with an advanced chimney breast.

The ground floor has a replacement timber boarded door, and there is another replacement timber boarded door on the second storey with a glass bipartite panel in the upper section. Most of the windows are replacement 12-pane designs. The roof is pitched and covered with grey slates, featuring flat-roofed dormer heads that are not attached to the windows below. There is a raised skew on the left and a raised skew and skewput from the former building on the right. The southwest gable apex has a coped stack, while the northeast gable stack is coped and stepped, with replacement cans.
