Description

This is an earlier to mid-19th century warehouse, part of the Grange Distillery, located on Grange Road, Burntisland. It is a roughly rectangular building with a triple-pitched piended roof, although the south end wall is splayed. The building is disused and was formerly used as a bonded warehouse. It is constructed with roughly coursed rubble, stone cills, and ashlar pillars and arches.

The north elevation has six bays. A blocked segmental arch is located to the right of centre, with windows in two bays to the right and three bays to the left. Regular windows are present at both upper floors. Openings in bays 2, 4, and 6 are all blocked. The south elevation is regular with six bays, situated on ground that slopes to the right. All windows are blocked on the ground floor, as well as in bays 1, 3, and 5.

On the east elevation, the outer right corner is deeply chamfered. There is a modern opening and platform to the outer right at ground level, with most of the windows blocked. The west elevation features nine cart arches at ground level, with remains of an altered arch joining that at the outer left (the second arch is now blinded). Five irregular openings are above, seemingly forming the outer skin of the warehouse, which may be from an older building.

Many windows retain their original 45-pane, top-hopper glazing. The roofs are covered with tarred felt and fitted with louvred ventilators.

The interior on the ground and first floors features five rows of 13 cast-iron columns. The second floor has two rows of 13 narrower columns. Barrel rails are present on both the first and second floors.

Planning permission was being sought at the time of resurvey for conversion of the warehouse into flats. Other buildings associated with the distillery – The Old Office House, Long Byre, Grange Flats, Grange Distillery Cottage and Main Gateway – are listed separately.
