Description

St Columba's Church, located on Inverkeithing Road in Aberdour, was built in the 1830s as a squat, cruciform-plan Gothic chapel with a bellcote. The church is constructed of snecked, coursed, tooled stone, with long and short droved ashlar used for arises and window margins. A base course and eaves course are also present. Pointed hoodmoulds feature over the openings, incorporating distinctive stops.

The west (principal) elevation is symmetrical. A central doorpiece is flanked by nook shafts with bell capitals, topped by a roll moulded pointed arch and a pointed hoodmould with carved green-man stops. Above the door is a central, tripartite, pointed arch lancet window, with the central lancet being taller. A central apex niche sits above the window, featuring a moulded corbel set between two more moulded corbels, which support a trefoil head at the base of the bellcote. The bellcote itself has an open pointed arch with stops, chamfered arises, flanking buttresses, a four-gabled roof with stylised decoration, and a decorated cross at the centre of the roof.

The north elevation has an advanced gabled transept positioned slightly off-centre to the left. It features a plate-traceried double lancet window with a central quatrefoil above, beneath a pointed hoodmould with stops. A central apex niche with a moulded corbel is also present. Two chamfered, pointed arch lancet windows are set back to the right. A plain, short, squat chancel wall is setback to the left.

The east elevation features an advanced chancel with a tripartite pointed arch lancet at head height, with the central lancet being taller.

The south elevation is similar to the north, with the transept advanced to the off-centre right.

The entrance is a timber two-leaf door with decorative pointed arch raised beading and triangular motifs on each leaf. Leaded, diamond-paned lights are used throughout. The roof is pitched slate, topped with capped gablet skewputs on each gable, and featuring raised ashlar saw-toothed skews.

Inside, a vestibule leads to two timber arched, panelled doors that open to the east into the main body of the church. A stone carved font is set between these doors, featuring trefoiled niches to the pier and quatrefoils to the basin. A timber arched, panelled door to the south leads to a small WC, while a timber arched, panelled door to the north provides access to a stone spiral staircase leading to a gallery above. The nave and chancel are lined with tongue and groove timber wainscoting. Timber pews fill the length of the chancel. A seven-sided timber pulpit, with decorative detailing, a moulded base, quatrefoils within panels, a moulded cornice, and a missing door, is located in the north transept. Box-pews are present in the south transept. A modern timber and plate glass partition wall slightly overhanging creates a first-floor balcony to the west, with a stained glass panel centred at its base. The ceiling is a fine vault painted turquoise with white ribs; the nave and chancel have three pointed transverse ribs supported by moulded corbels, while the crossing has a quadripartite pointed arch supported by four vaulting shafts and a centrally decorated boss with plant motifs, from which a light fitting is suspended. Pointed wall ribs to the north, south, east, and west are supported by moulded corbels.
