Description
3 Balfour Place is a house from the later part of the 18th century that was renovated in 1948 by Gillespie & Scott. It is a single-storey and attic house designed in the East Neuk style, with a single-storey cottage to the left that has been incorporated into the main house. The exterior features harl, pantiles, gabled dormers that break the eaves, and a half-hipped roof.
On the west (principal) elevation, there is an off-centre two-leaf timber door with a plain stone surround, flanked by three gabled dormers that also break the eaves. There are later alterations and additions on the far right side.
The east elevation has a pair of bipartite gabled dormers breaking the eaves in the outer bays of the attic floor, along with a later lean-to conservatory addition on the left.
The windows are primarily traditional sliding sash and case, with 12 panes and horns. There is a wallhead stack on the north gable and another stack on the east elevation.
Inside, the house was renovated in 1948 using good quality materials. It features timber panelled doors and a timber staircase with some reclaimed timber uprights and wrought iron. The principal rooms have simple moulded stone chimneypieces.
