Description
4 Balfour Place is a single storey and attic building from around 1820, originally serving as accommodation for workers at a timber yard. The structure features 6 bays in the East Neuk style and has undergone later alterations and additions, mainly by Gillespie & Scott around 1946. The exterior is harled and has pantiles with a slate easing course on the south elevation, which includes slated catslide dormers that break the eaves.
The south elevation, which is the principal entrance, has a mostly regular arrangement of single light openings, with the exception of a bipartite window in the third bay on the ground floor. The north elevation features a lean-to with a door that provides access to No 4, and to the left, there is a half hipped pantiled attic floor extension from around 1974, set at right angles over a square-headed pend.
On the east elevation, which overlooks the Kinness Burn, there is a canted oriel window on the ground floor and a single attic window. The windows throughout the building are predominantly 12-pane and 6-pane timber sash and case windows with horns. The gable end stacks and a central ridge stack are also present.
Inside, the interior mainly reflects work from around 1946 and includes good quality timberwork and panelled doors.
