Description
6 Balfour Place is a former sawmill and timber store, likely built in the early 19th century. It was converted into flats around 1895 and later into terraced housing around 1948 by Gillespie & Scott, resulting in three properties. The building features a flat roof, with rubble on the east elevation and harl on the west elevation.
The west entrance elevation, which includes numbers 6 and 7, has three bays and a central boarded timber entrance door topped with a simple rectangular fanlight. Number 8 is an L-plan structure with a single bay on the left and a projecting two-storey wing with a piend roof and pantiles on the right. This wing has an off-centre, two-leaf part-glazed timber door and a string course that divides the storeys.
The east elevation has six regularly spaced bays that face directly onto Kinness Burn. There is an arched opening at river level in bay 3 that has been filled in but is still noticeable. The first floor is slated, and the elevation predominantly features 8-pane timber sash and case windows, which have horns. There are gable stacks, as well as additional stacks set parallel along the roof.
Inside, some chimneypieces with arched cast-iron registers are still present. Additionally, there is a section of rubble wall that fronts onto Kinness Burn to the left of number 6.
