Sultery Building With Shop And Post Office, 8-20 Rocks Road, Charlestown

The Sultery Building, located at 8-20 Rocks Road in Charlestown, dates back to 1770 and was originally a granary and cart shed. It is a three-storey, five-bay structure with a symmetrical rectangular plan. The building features a pedimented central section and has five partially blocked arches on the ground floor. The exterior is made of exposed sandstone, with the rear harled and accented by three pink band courses. The openings are framed with ashlar, and there is an eaves course at the front along with raised gable wallheads.

On the west (principal) elevation, there is a central door flanked by two windows, which have been inserted into previously arched openings that are now blocked. Each outer bay has a door, and there are five windows on the first floor along with granary openings on the second floor, including a central hoist door situated above. An additional first-floor window is located between the first and second bays on the left. The central three bays are topped with a gabled pediment, and there is a central corniced stack with diamond decoration that once supported a bell. A niche for a bell pull is positioned above the left of the central door, and a wall-mounted letterbox is located to the right of the far-left ground floor window, featuring a 'Post Office' inscription on its mouth hood. The door below has 'G VI R' and a crown decoration.

The south elevation has a replacement central set of steps and a porch that leads to first-floor accommodation. There are flanking windows on the first floor and two blind windows on the second floor, with a central blind round-headed window above. The gablehead is raised and decorated with diamonds, and there are corniced chimney stacks at either end with circular cans.

The east elevation includes two doors with flanking windows, and the first-floor windows and second-floor granary openings are centered above the ground floor windows and the right-hand door. An additional ground floor window is located to the right of the right door, and there is a first-floor window between the second and third bays.

The north elevation is partially visible and features a first-floor door and a window to the right, along with a second-floor door to the left and an external replacement staircase.

The building has varied fenestration, primarily consisting of 12-pane timber sash and case windows, with timber shutters on the upper storey openings. The roof is M-gabled and covered with slate. The interior was not seen in 2000.
