Description

The Old Parish Church and Burial Ground in Monimail features the fragmentary remains of a pre-Reformation church, with a restored north aisle and several notable monuments from the 17th to 19th centuries, all surrounded by cemetery walls. The old church has been disused since 1796 and is largely demolished, with only the partially rebuilt eastern end remaining at a reduced level. The structure is built of rubble with ashlar dressings and has flat stone coping.

On the north wall, there is a round-arched, roll-moulded tomb recess next to an ogival-headed aumbry. The north aisle, constructed after 1690 and repaired in 1831, is now used as a mausoleum. It features polished ashlar with each stone marked by an incised cross and roll-moulded architraves. The west wall has an enlarged door flanked by blocked windows, while the east wall has a blind double window and a crest in the gable. The building has a moulded eaves cornice, skews, and a slate roof.

The Cunnoquhie enclosure on the south wall contains an arcaded and pedimented 18th-century mausoleum. To the east of the north aisle is a large Gothic monument signed by "Anderson and Chisolm, sculptors, Perth." The cemetery walls are rubble-built, and the corniced, square stugged ashlar gatepiers have war memorial plaques set in panels.
