Description
The Old Parish Church and Churchyard in Gladsmuir dates back to 1695 and is now in ruins, located to the north of the 1838 church. The building has an oblong plan oriented along an east-west axis, with a transeptal aisle to the north. It is constructed of random rubble with ashlar dressings. There are doorways on the south and east returns of the north aisle. The aisle features a semi-circular arch that opens into the church, supported by moulded impost stones. Inside, there are rectangular windows with arched embrasures, which have checks and hinge pins for external shutters. The north gable has bipartite windows, while the east and west gables also contain windows. Joist holes suggest that there were once galleries at both the east and west ends of the church. The structure has crowstepped gables and a carved rose finial on the east side, along with a grand bird-cage bellcote on the west, which has round-arched openings and an ogee roof topped with a finial. The church is currently roofless.
To the north of the now ruinous church walls, there are early 19th-century burial enclosures with classical detailing, made of rubble with ashlar dressings and some rusticated quoins. An 18th-century table monument is located in the north aisle, featuring a carved relief and flanked by a wall monument to Robert Hogg, who died in 1768, complete with pilasters and memento mori (mortuary trophies). There is also a relief commemorating James Ainslie, who died in 1876. A two-faced mass clock dated 1700 is positioned at the southwest angle of the church. The graveyard is enclosed by rubble coped retaining walls, which include a lean-to toolshed.
