Schoolhouse And School, Gladsmuir

The schoolhouse and school in Gladsmuir, built around 1840, is a two-storey, three-bay L-plan structure featuring an advanced gabled wing on the left. The schoolroom, which is single-storey and also L-plan, has a squared and snecked sandstone exterior with ashlar dressings. It includes stone mullions for the bipartite windows. A doorway is located in the re-entrant angle and has a strip fanlight above it, with a bipartite window to the right. The first floor has two windows that break the eaves in pedimented gabled dormerheads. The advanced bay has bipartite windows on both the ground and first floors, along with a blank ashlar panel at the gablehead. The east gable end features two windows on the first floor. At the rear, there is a gabled porch, a stair window, and two additional first-floor windows, all detailed similarly. There is a harled, single-storey, three-bay range that is recessed and adjoins to the west, with a porch in the re-entrant angle. The former schoolroom has sash and case windows with a four-pane glazing pattern. The roof is covered with grey slates, has straight skews with gablet skewnutts, and features ashlar coped stacks with decorative cans.
