Description
Abden Farm is an 1846 steading, comprising a small U-shaped courtyard with an integrated cottage. The construction is mainly of rubble stone, with some squared stone, and features heavily dressed quoins. Segmental-headed cart arches are present, along with carved details, and the courtyard is paved with stone setts. Most doors are of boarded timber, except where otherwise noted.
The south-east elevation showcases a gabled bay belonging to the cottage on the far left, featuring a single window with a carved putti head on the lintel. Pyramidally-coped, square gatepiers flank a wide courtyard entrance, immediately to the right of the cottage, with a screen wall extending beyond. A triple-gable range adjoins this, displaying a variety of architectural elements, including windows in the gableheads and sliding doors in the centre and left gables.
The north courtyard elevation has a two-storey range with a central door flanked by windows on the ground floor. Above, a hayloft opening has a brick dormer pediment in the centre. The west range incorporates a cartshed and granary on the right, with two cart arches beneath louvered openings, and a lower cottage to the left. This cottage has a window within a partially blocked cart arch to the right, and a catslide roof to the left, with a tiny window, door, and further tiny window on the return to the right. A lower range on the east elevation has two sliding doors to the left, a door and adjoining window in a partially blocked cart arch to the right, and a further window to the centre bay. A small brick tower projects to the outer right.
The south-west elevation features a four-bay cottage on the right, with a part-glazed timber door in the bay to the right of the centre. This door is flanked by small carved flower panels on the doorhead and lintel, and a bipartite window sits to the left, with single windows in the outer bays. A taller range, incorporating a cartshed and granary, is situated on the left, featuring three louvered openings close to the eaves.
The north-west elevation exhibits a variety of elements, including a gabled bay on the outer right with a sliding timber door below a hayloft opening, and a lower lean-to bay projecting to the left. The north-east elevation comprises a lower range with window openings flanking a blank central section.
Windows use four- and 12-pane glazing patterns in timber sash and case windows. The courtyard windows feature 6-pane top hoppers, while the outer bays of the triple gable on the south-east elevation have 3-pane vertically-astragalled fixed windows. A modern window is located on the west side of the courtyard. Grey slates cover the cottage roof, while corrugated iron/asbestos roofing is used elsewhere. Coped rubble and brick stacks, ashlar-coped skewbacks, and moulded skewputts are also present. The courtyard is paved with stone setts.
