Description
The War Memorial and Garden on Durie Street in Leven was built around 1920, with a boundary wall memorial added in 1950. The main feature is an obelisk war memorial made of granite on an ashlar base.
The World War I monument consists of a large raised ashlar plinth with steps at the outer angles, leading to a stepped polygonal base and pedestal. This pedestal includes a Roll of Honour and a cornice, with a tablet inscribed:
'IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THOSE FROM
THE PARISH OF SCOONIE WHO FELL
IN THE GREAT WAR OF 1914-18'
located at the base of the obelisk.
To the left and right of the memorial, there is a boundary wall made of stepped, coped ashlar, dated '1939' on the left and '1945' on the right. The center features a moulded panel with four bronze plaques that bear the Roll of Honour, alongside a similar plaque that reads:
'TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN GRATEFUL
MEMORY OF THOSE OF THE PARISH OF
SCOONIE WHO FELL IN THE WORLD WAR
1939-1945'.
