Description

The drinking fountain in Dunfermline Public Park was designed by Robert Cameron in 1887. It features a three-stage, square plan with chamfered angles, constructed from polished pink granite. Each side has a pedimented niche, and the fountain stands on an octagonal stone base with semicircular steps on either side.

Each niche includes a shell-headed design with a cast-iron lion's head waterspout and a rounded basin. Flanking pilasters rise to a broken-bed pediment supported by consoles. There are panelled pilasters that extend to the cornice at the level of the pediment at each corner, with fluted consoles at the base.

The upper stage, also dated 1887, has a tapered concave profile with curved panels on each side, and the angles are scrolled at both the base and apex. The apex features a moulded cap adorned with scrolls at the corners and is topped by a bronze lion holding a heraldic shield. There is a band course at each of the lower levels and at the base of the upper stage.
