Fernie Castle

Fernie Castle is a 16th century L-plan tower house featuring a circular turret that is corbelled to a square shape at the upper level, projecting from the north-west angle. The building has four storeys with attics, an 18th century east wing, a 19th century west wing, and various additions to the north. The exterior is harled with ashlar dressings.

On the south elevation, the original tower house has two bays, with the left bay advanced and gabled, featuring a projecting 19th century castellated dummy porch. There are two window openings above and a door located in the re-entrant angle, along with two ground floor slit openings in the right bay, which have 12-pane sashes above. The three-storey east wing has three irregular bays, a 19th century door set in a hood-moulded architrave with sidelights, and 12-pane sashes. At the north-east angle, there is a four-storey round tower with a conical roof. The west wing was raised to two storeys later in the 19th century and has four bays with 12-pane sashes, a crenellated parapet linked to a tall square terminal turret, and a similar block to the north, beyond the courtyard, which is parallel to the west wing. The building features crowstepped gables, apex and axial stacks, and slated roofs.

Inside, there is a vaulted ground floor chamber in the tower house. The east wing includes decorative cast-iron stair balusters, panelled doors in architraves, and some ornamental plasterwork.
