Description

The Library House, located on Acre Road in Muirhouses, Bo'ness, dates from around 1870 and is a single storey and attic former library and librarian's house designed in the cottage orné style. It is primarily constructed of squared and snecked tooled sandstone, featuring overhanging eaves, chamfered openings, and a columned entrance.

On the south elevation, there is a central projecting half-hipped gable with a generously recessed two-bay wing to the left and a slightly recessed one-bay wing to the right, which was the former library. A single Doric column supports the porch at the outer right, leading to the entrance door of the library.

The north elevation has a near-central two-bay gable with a single storey wing to the right, while the wing to the left is obscured by a later 20th-century rubble sandstone extension. Some original leaded lattice glazing remains on the north elevation, although most windows have been replaced with uPVC. The roof is covered with graded grey slates, and there are timber doors leading to the former library and the right wing of the north elevation. A ridge stack is located between the former library and the house, with a partial stack on the west side.

Inside, the former library features a recess for shelves on the east wall and a fireplace now flanked by shelves on the west wall. Access to the house was originally through the west wall but is now through a later rear extension. The attic has coombed ceilings.

There are also ancillary structures and boundary walls, including a low boundary wall to the south. To the northwest, there is a washhouse and lavatory, which are single storey and built of tooled sandstone with a piended roof and graded grey slates. The washhouse, now used as a store, has two doors to the south with chamfered droved openings, with the lavatory located to the right.
