Description
This former tobacco warehouse, located on Scotland's Close in Bo'ness, dates back to 1772 and was restored between 1978 and 1980 by Falkirk District Council. It is a four-storey building with a loft and features three bays, along with a square stair tower. The structure is constructed from random rubble with raised squared margins and quoins, and it has an eaves cornice. Notable architectural elements include two voussoired segmentally-arched pends, blind oculi, and keystones.
On the east elevation, the ground floor has a keystoned arch to the right, which is infilled with a vertically-astragalled window. This arch bears the inscription 'IC 1772', and there is a window to the left. Above, there are three windows on each floor, with the first and second floors featuring keystoned windows, while the third floor has smaller windows that were originally for the loft. An oculus is present in the gablehead. There is also a single-storey courtyard wall with a keystoned segmentally-arched pend at the outer left.
The south elevation, which serves as the entrance, has five bays and features a pyramidally-roofed square stair tower in the centre. This tower has timber doors facing east and west, tiny stair windows on the south and west sides, and three windows on the east side. The flanking bays are regularly fenestrated, with two doors added at the ground level on the right.
The west elevation mirrors the east elevation but includes two windows at ground level. The north elevation is a regularly-fenestrated, five-bay elevation with a low range, which is the library building, abutting at the right.
The building features replacement timber sash and case windows with a 4-pane glazing pattern, grey slate roofing, and coped rubble stacks at the gablehead and axial points, topped with cans. The skews are ashlar-coped.
Inside, the interior has been reconstructed with hollow-tile floors supported by cast-iron columns. The ground floor, which houses Bo'ness Library, includes keystoned segmental-headed arches and a cast-iron oven made by 'T MELVIN & SONS, ST ROLLOX IRON WORKS, GLASGOW'. A stone turnpike stair is also present.
