Description

The Furnishing Department of the Bo'Ness Co-Operative Society Ltd, located at 57 North Street in Bo'Ness, dates back to 1879 and was converted into flats in the late 20th century. This two-storey, three-bay villa features a piend roof and has a principal elevation made of stugged squared and snecked sandstone rubble, with some Aberdeen bond and ashlar dressings, while the rear is harled. It has a deep base course and blocking course, jettied string and eaves courses, with the latter forming a solid hoodmould to the south that is stepped at the center and features a raised section with the date. The hoodmould includes label stops, and the openings have roll-moulded architraves and raked cills. The windows on the south, west, and north elevations are all large.

The south (principal) elevation is symmetrical, with a central window at ground level flanked by bipartite windows in the outer bays, which have chamfered outer angles that are corbelled to square at the string course. At the first floor, there is a single window in the center flanked by slightly smaller windows.

The west (entrance) elevation has two regularly-fenestrated bays that project to the left, with a chamfered and corbelled angle to the right leading to a right return. This section features steps leading up to a six-panelled timber door, a blocked fanlight, and a decorative hoodmould with label stops beneath a single window at the first floor, with further windows on each floor of the recessed face to the right.

The east elevation is a regularly-fenestrated, three-bay elevation, while the north (rear) elevation is asymmetrically fenestrated and extended to the left.

The windows are timber sash and case with a four-pane glazing pattern. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there is a coped and shouldered ashlar wallhead stack with a tall can. Some first-floor windows feature ironwork balconettes.

Inside, the late 20th-century interior retains a cantilevered stone staircase with decorative cast-iron barleytwist balusters and a timber handrail.
