Cleveland, Carriden Brae, Muirhouses, Bo'Ness

Cleveland, located at Carriden Brae in Muirhouses, Bo'Ness, is a pair of single-storey attached cottages built in 1874, designed in an L-plan and styled as cottage orné. The cottages are primarily constructed from squared and snecked tooled sandstone and feature overhanging eaves and droved chamfered openings.

On the east elevation, which is the principal side, there is a gabled porch in the low wing to the left, marked with a datestone from 1874, and four bays to the right. The north elevation has a half-hipped two-bay end gable to the left (No 7), with two recessed bays to the right and an additional low recessed wing attached to the right that includes an entrance door. The west elevation consists of four bays, with an end gable to the right that is obscured by a modern conservatory, and a three-bay low recessed wing to the left.

The original leaded lattice glazing remains intact, except for the low recessed wing on the west elevation. The entrance door on the east elevation (No 7) is timber boarded. The roofs are covered with graded grey slates, and there are gable end stacks on the south and west sides, along with a ridge stack at the junction between Nos 7 and 8.

Inside, Nos 7 and 8 have been modernised. The boundary walls consist of a low rubble wall to the east and north with rubble coping, which rises to a higher wall with semi-circular coping at the southeast. The original entrance opposite the door of No 7 is now blocked.
