Description
This former schoolhouse and school, located on Acre Road in Muirhouses, Bo'Ness, was built in 1866. It is a single-storey and attic, five-bay L-plan structure designed in the cottage orné style. The building is primarily constructed from squared and snecked tooled sandstone, with the Old School House being painted. It features overhanging eaves and chamfered openings, along with an unusual diagonal pattern of leaded lattice glazing on the north, east, and south elevations.
On the east (principal) elevation, there is an off-centre decorative timber porch with a piended roof, and to the left, a single-storey advanced piended wing that has a gable corbelled between the ground and attic floors. The ground floor includes a canted four-light bay window. To the right, there is a four-bay single-storey wing with a central gable that contains a datestone from 1866, and a modern door opening to the right.
The south elevation features an advanced single-storey and attic gable with timber detailing at the apex, a slightly recessed single-storey one-bay wing to the right, and a generously recessed low wing to the left. The north elevation has a single-storey and attic gable with similar timber detailing at the apex, and a narrow low wing to the right that may contain the original entrance to the school.
The building retains predominantly original leaded pane glazing on the east, south, and north elevations, and is topped with graded grey slates. The Old School House has a clustered four-can ridge stack and a chimney stalk on the west gable end, while the Old School House itself features a simple ridge stack and a tall stack parallel to the west.
Inside the Old Schoolhouse, which was not seen in 2003, the former schoolroom has been converted into two rooms but may have always been divided this way. The schoolroom(s) was originally open to a timber roof but has since been floored to create attic rooms. The interior features good quality timber throughout, with nicely detailed four-panelled doors. Access from the schoolroom(s) to the schoolhouse has been blocked up, and there is a small room at the rear with a cast iron tiled chimneypiece.
The boundary walls to the northeast consist of a sandstone rubble wall with flat rubble coping. There is also an ancillary structure, which is a single-storey squared and snecked tooled sandstone building that may have been a former school lavatory located to the northwest.
