Description

Stenhouse and Carron Parish Church, built between 1897 and 1900 and again from 1905 to 1907 by J J Burnet, features a design adapted from a church in Shiskine, Arran, with Romanesque detailing. The church has a bold, squat west tower with a timber-framed porch, a low five-bay nave, and a chancel, along with a range of church rooms at right angles connected to the manse. The exterior is harled with red ashlar dressings and long and short quoins, topped with a red tiled roof.

The tower has a battered base, large paired arched belfry lights, and a corbelled parapet with angle bartizans. Its roof is a tiled pyramid with a finial and small lucarnes. The west face features a large window set under an arch, which includes two lower cusped lights and a single round-arched light above, connected by a "tree of life" dated panel. There is a semi-octagonal stair turret at the southwest angle. The body of the church has three-light windows on the south side and two-light windows on the north side.

Inside, the nave and south aisle have a barrel roof supported by cusped arched trusses, and there is a rear gallery. The east window features stained glass depicting Christ in Majesty by Strachan, and the chancel includes a frieze of cherubs, with the altar and choir stalls serving as a memorial for the First World War. A cast bronze font with cherubs is also present.

The church hall range has a door nearest the church and features windows arranged in a 1-3-3-1-2 light pattern, along with a wide swept roof. The interior is simply detailed.

Attached to the south is the manse, which is a two-storey asymmetrical design with a variety of window styles. It has a recessed, off-centre verandah to the south with a tiled dado and a timber-framed wall above. The east bay is gabled with a stack, and it has a red tiled roof with wide plain barge boards. The manse retains its interior timber panelling and fittings.
