Description
This is a mock half-timbered tea-room and dwelling, dating to 1933, with shops at ground floor level. It occupies a prominent corner site in Falkirk and was largely reconstructed in 2001 following a fire. The building is two storeys and has an attic. It is designed in the Elizabethan style.
The ground floor is built of whitewashed ashlar, while the upper floors are finished with decorative black and white mock half-timbering, with some stugged ashlar dressings. Architectural features include a base course, a jettied attic floor, and prominent gableheads. Tudor-arched doors have hoodmouldings. Stone mullions are present at ground level, with timber transoms and mullions elsewhere.
The southwest corner elevation is a single bay with a broad gable and canted outer angles. The ground floor features a broad door above which is the number '25' set within a hoodmould. A large 8-light transomed window is situated on the first floor, with stone-corbelled brackets flanking the windowhead, supporting the jettied attic and its 4-light window.
The west elevation, facing Vicar Street, has a deep-set, pilastered shop doorway to the centre at ground level, although details are obscured by later timber signs. Metal-framed display windows are in the flanking bays, each with an etched panel set into the multi-pane toplight. Above, two asymmetrically-disposed bays feature a 12-light transomed window in one gablehead and a single transomed window in the other. An irregular terrace adjoins the outer left side.
The south elevation, facing Princes Street, is largely symmetrical across five bays. The ground floor has an in-canted shop door to the centre, flanked by narrow display windows and broad display windows beyond, the left window featuring a central astragal. A boarded timber door with decorative ironwork hinges is located on the outer right, and a hoodmoulded bipartite window is on the far left. Two dominant gabled bays are above, each with an 8-light transomed window at first floor level and a 4-light window in the gablehead. A narrow transomed window sits below a small window in the penultimate bay to the right, and each outer bay features a narrow 4-light transomed window at first floor level and a small 2-light window above. An irregular terrace adjoins the outer right side.
The windows are predominantly timber casement and pivot windows with multi-pane leaded glazing patterns, with coloured glass in the first-floor toplights. The roof is covered in red tiles, and features overhanging eaves, plain bargeboarding, and small timber gablehead finials.
The Princes Street shop interior is modern. The interiors of the other properties were not accessible at the time of the resurvey in 2002.
