Description

22-24 Newmarket Street in Falkirk is a three-storey, four-bay tenement building from the late 19th century, with some minor alterations made in the late 20th century. This classically detailed structure features shops on the ground floor and is part of an irregular terrace. It has a cornice and frieze at the ground and first floor, along with a mutuled eaves cornice topped with a blocking course. The windows are architraved and pilastered, some with stone mullions and columnar details.

On the principal elevation, the central bay of the ground floor has a pilastered doorpiece with large decorative consoles and a relief-carved segmental pediment topped with acroteria, leading to a two-leaf panelled timber door. Flanking this are three altered marble shopfronts; the right side features a central door flanked by plain columns and display windows, while the left side has a door to the right and two display windows to the left. The first floor showcases wide tripartite windows in the outer bays, each with a central light flanked by Ionic columns, outer pilasters, and carved windowheads. Bays two and three have pilastered single windows with guilloche detail on the lintels, and a later window has been inserted at the centre. The second floor mirrors the first floor's window arrangement but features only consoled cornices, with an additional later window between bays three and four.

The building has a four-pane glazing pattern in timber sash and case windows, except for the later windows. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there is a cast-iron downpipe with a rectangular rainwater hopper.
