Description
This is a terrace of ten single-storey, two-bay estate cottages located on High Street, Aberlady, dating to around 1840. They were originally built as part of the Wemyss Estate. The terrace is in a Gothic style and has been recently restored. The two end cottages project slightly to the rear, with a higher roof ridge and a dividing skew. The cottages are constructed of roughly squared and snecked red sandstone with droved ashlar dressings, cavetto moulded window reveals, and an eaves course. The arrangement is symmetrical, with five Tudor arched doorways on each side of a central, similarly arched pend (which has been renewed). Between each doorway is a pointed window. The sash and case windows are characterised by pointed arches and traceried upper sashes. The rear elevations are harled. The roofs are slate covered, with ashlar coped skews and ten coped chimney stacks. The statutory address is 1-10 inclusive, Red Row, Aberlady Main Street. An Ordnance Survey map from 1854 depicts the area. The terrace is closely related to 11 and 12 Main Street, and The Wagon Inn, all of which are listed separately.
