Description
The War Memorial in Bolton, designed by A N Paterson in 1921, stands as a red sandstone ashlar monument. It features a triangular shaft with diagonal angle pilasters, raised upon an ashlar base. Two ashlar drinking bowls are integrated into moulded panels on two of its faces. Inscribed within a frieze above the bowls are the names of those who fell, accompanied by a dedication on the cornice frieze. The ashlar finial above is a moulded feature, consisting of three crosses embracing a shaft. This war memorial is notable for its practical and somewhat unusual combination with a drinking fountain, a design precedent for which can be seen in the East Saltoun Fountain. Records relating to the memorial are held within the A N Paterson Collection at the National Records of Scotland.
