Description
This is an 18th-century house with an extension dating from around 1835, when it was linked to a single-storey schoolroom built around 1830. The complex is situated backing onto the graveyard of Bolton Parish Church.
The Old Schoolhouse comprises a gabled east-west wing. Around 1835, a piend-roofed projection was added to the centre of the south elevation, partially concealing the original doorway. A doorway, flanked by the projection to the left, has a small-pane fanlight above a pair of doors. A window is located above the doorway on the first floor, and there are windows to each floor in the outer right bay. The rear elevation is raised by the sloping ground of the graveyard and has three windows on the ground floor, with a blank upper section. The south projection has windows on the south side and one on each return elevation. A lean-to addition has been made to the east gable end. The windows are sash and case style with a 12-pane glazing pattern. There are end stacks and the roof is covered in red pantiles.
The school, built around 1830, currently serves as a workshop and is linked to the southwest angle of The Old Schoolhouse. It is constructed of rubble with ashlar dressings. The west elevation has a wide doorway, offset to the right, with a modern lintel. There are multi-pane windows in both the north and south gables, in sash and case form. A timber mullioned bipartite window is present on the east side with diamond lead-pane glazing. A former schoolmaster’s room is located at the north end. The roof is covered in grey slates and has ashlar coped skews and dressings to the end stacks.
Retaining walls with semi-circular coping are built of rubble and are situated to the south. Graveyard walls adjoin the site to the north. Original features retained include a 19th-century boiler and a teacher’s desk. A winding timber stair is located in The Old Schoolhouse near the original doorway. A later school at the south end of the village is listed separately.
