Description
A late 18th century circular dovecot, situated near Under Bolton Farm. The dovecot is constructed of rubble with a battered base and ashlar detailing around the door margins and corbels at the eaves. It has a conical grey slate roof surmounted by a decorative octagonal timber lantern with a leaded dome and a weathervane. A doorway provides access from the roadside. The building adjoins a steading range to the south. Inside, the walls are lined with 710 nesting boxes. The dovecot is prominently situated in Bolton village. A similar, more ornate circular dovecot exists at Keith Marischal Steading, Humbie. Contemporary references can be found in the Transactions of East Lothian Antiquarian and Field Naturalists, volume 111 (1934), and the Weekly Scotsman of 1 January 1947.
