Description

This is an 18th-century house with an extension dating to circa 1835, when it was linked to a single-story schoolroom built circa 1830. The buildings back onto the graveyard of Bolton Parish Church.

The original house is a gabled structure oriented east-west. A piend-roofed projection was added to the centre of the south elevation around 1835, masking the original doorway. A doorway flanked by this projection, with a small-pane fanlight above, provides access. There are two-leaf doors and a window above. Windows are placed on each floor of the outer right bay. The rear elevation sits above the higher ground of the graveyard and has three ground-floor windows, with no windows above. The south projection has windows to the south and one to each return elevation. A lean-to addition is present at the east gable end.

The windows are sash and case with a 12-pane glazing pattern. The building has end chimney stacks and a red pantile roof.

The school, built circa 1830, now serves as a workshop and is linked to the southwest angle of the original house. It is constructed of rubble with ashlar dressings. The west elevation features a wide doorway, off-centre to the right, with a modern lintel. Multi-pane windows are present on the north and south gables, in a sash and case style. A timber mullioned bipartite window with diamond lead-pane glazing is on the east side. A former schoolmaster's room is located at the north end of the school. The school has grey slate roofing, ashlar coped skews, and ashlar dressings to the end stacks.

Retaining walls with semi-circular coping are constructed of rubble and are located to the south. Graveyard walls adjoin the property to the north.

Original features retained include a 19th-century boiler and teacher’s desk. A winding timber stair is located in the original house, adjacent to the original doorway. A later school building at the south end of the village is listed separately.
