Description

Upper Bolton is an 18th-century farmhouse with a later wing dating to circa 1800, forming an L-shaped plan. It is a two-storey building with a single-storey gabled porch. Constructed of rubble stone with ashlar dressings, the circa 1800 wing features broadly droved ashlar. The north elevation faces a steading and contains three widely spaced bays, with small windows in the centre and at ground level to the left, and regular windows to the right. A modern porch has been added to the original 18th-century porch on the left side. A high rubble wall with a pedestrian gateway is situated to the right.

The remaining right-hand bay of the original south elevation retains a window on each floor. A circa 1800 addition, noted for its higher eaves, adjoins the centre and right, with a doorway to the re-entrant angle and a window to the left. There are two windows at ground level to the south end of the addition, one of which is blinded.

Sash windows with a 12-pane glazing pattern are typical throughout the building. The roof is covered with grey slates, and the 18th-century wing has a steeply pitched gable with unusually pronounced skews and skewputts. Later ashlar stacks with thackstanes are also present.

Retaining rubble walls, with a rubble coping to the south, enclose a garden and link the farmhouse with a U-shaped steading to the north. These walls are not included in the listing.
