Description
The stables, forming a quadrangular court, date from around 1840. They were originally designed as a stable block with a cartshed and hayloft, but have since been converted into residential accommodation. They are built of red sandstone rubble with plain and stugged ashlar dressings, featuring crowsteps and beak skewputts.
The east range has a crowstepped gablet, projecting centrally, with piers framing a segmental archway. There is a blind ventilation slit at the top of the gablet and a stone finial. Single windows are positioned in the bays alongside the archway, with wide segmental carriage arches in the outer bays, now glazed.
The west range features a two-storey former hayloft block at its centre. The courtyard elevation has three segmental carriage arches supported by cast-iron columns; these have been blocked and are now windows or doors. A large, square, louvred timber ventilator with a slated spire and decorative weathervane is positioned centrally. A modern conservatory has been added to the exterior of the right-hand outer bay, with a window to the outer left. A lean-to kennel with a parapet and railings adjoins the centre of the range, and former pigsties are located to the right.
The north and south ranges have a variety of windows, doors, and loft openings, many of which have been altered. The courtyard elevations mostly feature glazed doorways and windows, providing access to chalet-style accommodation. The window glazing includes a mixture of 12-pane sash and case windows and timber diamond-pane casements. The roof is covered with grey slates, and ridge stacks are present, some of which have been altered.
The stables were likely erected around 1840 by Archibald Broun, who also undertook other works at Johnstounburn, including the gate lodge. The stable block’s design shares similar detailing with the gate lodge, which is listed separately. The stables are listed for their retention of the original coach house layout and for their contribution to the Johnstounburn House Hotel, providing additional accommodation.
