Description
The site includes a late 18th-century summer house and walled garden, situated within the grounds to the south of Johnstounburn House Hotel.
The summer house is a two-storey, square-plan garden pavilion constructed of random red sandstone rubble, with some harling remaining. It features ashlar dressings, an eaves course, and a cornice. A doorway faces east, featuring a three-pane fanlight above a blind, narrow eight-pane window, with a window guard below. A further doorway is located on the first floor to the east, accessed by a timber forestair. A squat, panelled stack is situated at the southwest corner. Narrow nine-pane sash and case windows are present on the north side, at both ground and first floor levels, the latter with a window guard. The roof is grey slated, pyramidal in form, with a lead weathervane and urn finials on three corners; one finial is missing.
The walled garden is enclosed by sandstone rubble walls with ashlar coping and some brick lining. A lean-to, 19th-century decorative hot-house is attached against the north wall, with a canted projection at its centre, a brick base course, and a decorative wrought-iron finial.
The Johnstounburn House Hotel, coach house, gate lodge, entrance arch, and dovecot are listed separately. Further information can be found in the listing for Johnstounburn House.
