Description
This is an 18th-century dovecot, significantly altered around 1840. It's a two-stage, lectern-style dovecot with a rectangular plan measuring 20 feet by 30 feet. The exterior is constructed from red rubble sandstone, with ashlar dressings and a rat course dividing the two stages. Chamfered arrises define the openings. The south-facing elevation features two bays, a central doorway, and two windows above. These windows are topped by ogival gable dormerheads that break the eaves, and incorporate a timber diamond-pane glazing pattern. Flight holes are set into two gabled dormers, each containing 14 holes within a round-headed panel. The side elevations are blank but have decorative Dutch-shaped skews and ashlar coped gables. The rear elevation is also blank. Decorative lead pigeon-in-flight finials adorn the lower corners. The interior contains 1014 nesting boxes. The dovecot is part of the Johnstounburn House estate and is referenced in the listing for Johnstounburn House, along with the hotel, coach house, gate lodge, and entrance arch, all of which are separately listed. Further information can be found in the Transactions of the East Lothian Antiquarian and Field Naturalists, volume 111, 1934, pages 13-14.
