Description
This is a later 18th-century summer house and walled garden located within the grounds of Johnstounburn House Hotel, to the south of the main house.
The summer house is a two-storey, square-plan garden pavilion constructed of random red sandstone rubble, with some harling remaining. It features ashlar dressings, an eaves course, and a cornice. A doorway on the east side has a three-pane fanlight above, with a blind, narrow eight-pane window above and a window guard. A further doorway is situated on the first floor, accessed by a timber forestair. A squat, panelled stack is located at the southwest corner. Narrow nine-pane sash and case windows are present on the north side, at both ground and first floor levels, with a window guard to the upper windows. The roof is grey slated and pyramidal, topped with a lead weathervane, and urn finials to three corners, one of which is missing.
The walled garden has sandstone rubble walls with ashlar coping and some brick lining. A lean-to, 19th-century decorative hot-house is built against the north wall. This features a canted projection at the centre, a brick base course, and a decorative wrought-iron finial.
Other structures within the Johnstounburn House estate, including the coach house, gate lodge, entrance arch, and dovecot, are listed separately. Further information relating to the site can be found in the listing for Johnstounburn House itself.
