Description

Cranston is a mid-19th century, 3-bay, 2-storey classical house that has been transformed into a 6-bay, 2-storey and attic villa. This alteration was carried out by R S Lorimer in 1911, which involved raising the single-storey wings and adding one bay to the south. In 1925, roofs were added to the sides of the building. The structure features squared and snecked rubble, with the central section on the west front lime washed over ashlar. The original house has ashlar dressings, a raised band course, and rusticated quoins. The west front has raised margins with chamfered arrises.

On the west elevation, there is a pedimented, channelled doorpiece, with tripartite windows flanking it and single lights in the outer bays. Above the three first-floor windows at the center, there are arched blind slits with lying-pane glazing. The eaves have been raised by three courses. The segmentally arched dormers at the center have flat roofs in the outer bays, all featuring studded flashings.

The east elevation is more plainly detailed, with two full-height canted window bays at the north and south gables, and a cast-iron balcony at the first floor between the bays, which are extensions from 1911. There is a variety of glazing patterns, including sash windows with 4-pane in the flanks and plate glass sashes at the rear. The dormers have small-pane casements. The roof is a grey slated mansard, swept at the eaves with lead flashings, and it has moulded copes to the ashlar roof and south gable stacks.

The boundary walls are constructed of rubble with ashlar coping, and there is a slate-roofed outbuilding abutting the south side.
