Description
No. 5, Luffness Mains Cottages is a row of farm cottages dating from before 1854. The row is symmetrical, comprising a central two-storey, seven-bay block flanked by a five-bay single-storey range on each side. The row terminates in a gabled, three-bay single-storey cottage with an attic projecting at a right angle. The cottages are constructed of random rubble with grey, stugged sandstone dressings. Some openings have been enlarged or blocked over time.
The south elevation features two doorways in the penultimate bays of the central block at ground level, with one window to the outer bays and four windows to the centre. The first floor has five smaller windows, with crowstepped gabled dormerheads breaking the eaves. The flanking single-storey bays have one door and four windows each, with two cottages closing each range. Advanced gable ends face south, each with a window at ground level and an attic window. A central door is present on the return at ground level, and a lean-to porch was added to the easternmost cottage.
The north elevation has altered window openings and, on the central block, small first-floor windows breaking the eaves beneath crowstepped gabled dormers. Sash windows with a four-pane glazing pattern are fitted throughout. Grey pantiles cover the south-facing pitch of the central block, while red pantiles are used at the rear. Grey slates cover the flanking ranges. The cottages have crowstepped gables, beak skewputts, paired diamond ridge stacks, and single stacks to the end cottages.
The cottages are shown on an 1854 Ordnance Survey map of Haddingtonshire.
