Description

No. 3, Luffness Mains Cottages is a row of farm cottages dating from before 1854, comprising single and two-storey elements. The arrangement is symmetrical, with a central two-storey, seven-bay block flanked by single-storey five-bay ranges. The row terminates in a gabled, single-storey, three-bay cottage with an attic projecting at a right angle. The cottages are constructed of random rubble with grey, stugged sandstone dressings. Some openings have been enlarged or blocked.

The south elevation features two doorways in the penultimate bays of the central block at ground level, with a single window in each outer bay and four windows in the central section. The first floor has five smaller windows, with crowstepped gabled dormerheads breaking the eaves. The flanking single-storey bays each contain one door and four windows, with two cottages closing each range. Advanced gable end elevations to the south show a ground floor window and attic window. A central door is present on the return at ground level, with a later lean-to porch added to the easternmost cottage. Windows are flanking. The north elevation has no doorways, with some altered window openings. The central block exhibits small first-floor windows breaking the eaves within crowstepped gabled dormers.

The cottages have sash and case windows with a four-pane glazing pattern. The south pitch of the central block is covered with grey pantiles, while the rear has red pantiles. The flanking ranges are roofed with grey slates. Notable features include crowstepped gables, beak skewputts, paired diamond ridge stacks, and single stacks to the end cottages. The 1854 Ordnance Survey map of Haddingtonshire provides a reference point for the cottages' early appearance.
