Description
Early 19th century. 3-bay classical T-plan villa. Main block
circa 1800-1810. 2-storey, attic and basement with marginally
later single storey attic and basement rear wing. Random
sandstone rubble, droved ashlar dressings; raised base and
eaves courses and rusticated quoins. Slate piended roofs;
ashlar stacks. Mainly plate glass sash windows, some 12-pane
glazing remaining.
N ENTRANCE FRONT: plain moulded door surrounded with
entablature. Balustraded stone steps oversailing basement.
Flush panelled door and decorative fanlight.
E and W sides of main block: shallower 3-bay. Blind 1st floor
windows to S sides.
S WING: from centre bay of main block, approximately 2 bays
deep. Larger windows. Ashlar steps and pilastered porch with
blocking course on W side; mansard attic addition behind.
INTERIOR: Notable features: geometric tiling to vestibule:
tripartite door to hall. Decorative plasterwork: panelled
doors, shutters. Wrought-iron stair balustrade. Basement
paved, with 19th century kitchen range.
Gabled garage to E side.
GARDEN PAVILION/GARDENER'S BOTHY:
Mid 19th century. 5-sided pavilion to SE of the house.
Squared, snecked rubble: droved ashlar dressings. Long wall
on road side with corner stack to N. Advanced gabled bay to
SW and gabled porch. Two 2-light lead paned casements in
advanced bay, with blind slit above. Rounded angle between
window bay and door. Pantiled roof with ridge tiles.
