Description
The Garden Pavilion at Monkscroft, Brewery Lane, Belhaven, Dunbar, is an early 19th-century structure, built between 1800 and 1810. It is a three-bay classical T-plan villa featuring a main block that is two storeys high, with an attic and basement, along with a slightly later single-storey rear wing. The building is constructed from random sandstone rubble with droved ashlar dressings, and it has raised base and eaves courses, as well as rusticated quoins. The roofs are slate piended, and there are ashlar stacks. The windows are primarily plate glass sash, with some retaining 12-pane glazing.
The entrance front on the north side has a plain moulded door framed by an entablature and is accessed by balustraded stone steps that oversail the basement. This entrance features a flush panelled door and a decorative fanlight. The east and west sides of the main block are shallower and have three bays, with blind first-floor windows on the south sides.
The southwest wing extends from the centre bay of the main block and is approximately two bays deep, featuring larger windows. It has ashlar steps and a pilastered porch with a blocking course on the west side, along with a mansard attic addition at the back.
Inside, notable features include geometric tiling in the vestibule, a tripartite door leading to the hall, decorative plasterwork, panelled doors, shutters, and a wrought-iron stair balustrade. The basement is paved and includes a 19th-century kitchen range.
Additionally, there is a gabled garage on the east side of the property. The Garden Pavilion, or Gardener's Bothy, is a mid-19th-century structure located to the southeast of the house. It is a five-sided pavilion made of squared, snecked rubble with droved ashlar dressings. The long wall facing the road has a corner stack to the north, and there is an advanced gabled bay to the southwest with a gabled porch. This bay features two two-light lead-paned casements, with a blind slit window above, and a rounded angle between the window bay and the door. The roof is pantiled with ridge tiles.
