Description

This building, located at 59 Easter Street in Duns, dates from the later 18th century and features additions from the early 19th century. It is a two-storey villa with an attic, consisting of three bays and a single room depth. There is also a later single-storey, two-bay wing and a converted service range. The exterior is finished in cream sandstone with ashlar dressings, and the ground rises towards the rear.

The original house has a symmetrical east elevation, with diagonally droved coursed stone and long and short rusticated quoins. It features a panelled door topped by a rectangular plate glass fanlight, set in a pedimented doorcase with a lugged architrave. The fenestration is regular, and there are two piend-roofed dormers at the wallhead. The south elevation has a two-bay harled gable end, with the right bay containing windows on both floors and the left bay featuring a door at ground level, along with an attic window in the gablehead. The west elevation is harl-pointed, with a central stair window, a sunken ground floor parlour with a small window to the left, and first-floor windows in the outer bays. The windows throughout are 12-pane timber sash and case. The building has ashlar coped skews and scrolled skewputts at the front, grey slate roofing, and brick stacks.

The later wing and service range consist of a single-storey, two-bay harl-pointed wing to the north, along with a recently converted lower service range extending westward, which includes skylights in the roof. This area has 4-pane timber sash and case windows, ashlar coped skews, a piended roof, grey slates, and a brick stack.

Inside, the property features two neo-classical gesso fireplaces, a panelled dado, shutters, and 19th-century plasterwork.

The boundary wall is constructed of rubble with ashlar coping and drops at the front, where there are a pair of squat obelisk gatepiers and a 20th-century wrought-iron gate. A secondary entrance to the north has been blocked.
