Description

The Coach House and Stables at Wellfield, Preston Road, Duns, dates from the early 19th century and is a two-storey L-plan structure that has recently been converted into a dwelling. The building features harled whin and sandstone rubble, with first-floor windows that break the eaves.

On the north range, there are three bays facing the court. The central entrance door has a small window above it, positioned against the eaves, and is flanked by bipartite windows with timber mullions. The gable end is blank, with a lean-to outhouse at the ground level facing an enclosed yard that opens to the court. The rear wall, which faces the road, aligns with the boundary wall and has irregular fenestration, featuring two windows on each floor, although only one breaks the eaves on the first floor, accompanied by a piended dormerhead. There is a former doorway to the right.

The west range also has three bays facing the court. It includes depressed carriage arches in the two right bays, which have been infilled with vertical glazing, and there are windows above. A door is located in the left bay at ground level, with a loading door above it, both of which are partially blocked and glazed. There is a tiny glazed opening to the left at ground level. The first-floor windows are topped with gabled dormerheads. The gable end features a window at ground level and a pointed-arch window at the centre of the first floor, along with a corbelled square finial and ashlar coped skews with ball finials on the corbelled skewputts. The rear elevation has a single gabled dormerhead.

The windows throughout the building are four-pane timber sash and case. The roof is pitched and piended, covered with grey slates, which appear purple on the west face, and features an ashlar stack.

The boundary walls consist of coped rubble and are high to the west with a door to the right, while the eastern side is lower and terminates in gatepiers (refer to a separate listing for Wellfield House). Low walls also enclose the court to the south.
