Description

This is a 16th-century dovecot situated near Nunraw House. It is a four-stage, beehive-shaped structure that tapers upwards, topped by a late 19th-century hexagonal birdcage cupola. The dovecot is constructed of rubble with dividing "rat courses," and features a dressed red sandstone cupola set upon a rubble base. It is 22 feet high, with walls 3 feet 8 inches thick. A low door with chamfered arrises provides access, and a window on the ground stage is currently blocked. Above the second rat course are 24 flight holes. The structure originally had a lean-to roof to the cupola, which featured a carved stone thistle, although this has now disappeared.

Inside, there are steps leading down to a lower floor level. The dovecot contains 450 nesting boxes, each 10 inches deep, previously accessed by a potence (a lifting device). The dovecot is located approximately 150 feet from the site of the Old Abbey. Notably, the number of flight holes is unusually large in relation to the number of nesting boxes, especially when considering the birdcage openings of the cupola.
