Description
Redside is a T-plan farmhouse with a complex history, originally built in the early 18th century as a 3-bay structure. It was soon extended to 4-bays and modified into its current T-plan shape by the addition of a projecting drawing room wing in the 19th century. The exterior is harled with painted ashlar margins.
On the southeast elevation, there is a wide single bay projection with a piend roof, located off-centre to the right. This projection features a semi-circular arched doorway on the left return, which includes a panelled door and fanlight. Above the door, there is a blind window on the first floor, with a tripartite window to the right. Flanking the projection at an angle are single windows, with an additional window on the outer left.
The northeast elevation has a stair window at the centre of the original house, with single-storey outbuildings on either side that have rounded outer angles.
The east elevation includes a deep extension at ground level with a pentice roof and a doorway on the right return. There is a square attic window in the gablehead, along with decorative skewputts.
The west elevation features a blank gable with decorative skewputts, which were likely moved from the original house. The sash and case windows have a 12-pane glazing pattern. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are pantiled single-storey extensions. Thackstances are present on the original gablehead stack to the east.
To the south, there is a rubble-coped retaining wall that forms a walled garden.
