Description

Balgone House is a primarily 17th century mansion, likely with earlier structural elements, and has undergone various additions and alterations, particularly restored in the 1990s. This traditional Scottish three-storey, nine-bay house has a complex building history. Originally an L-plan house with a round stair tower, it was reworked and extended after 1739, resulting in a symmetrical facade; the stair tower was transformed into a polygonal shape with a mirrored counterpart. Some 19th century Baronial additions have since been demolished. The exterior features pink harled masonry with exposed margins and quoins, along with a deep moulded eaves cornice and distinctive small lead and timber attic dormers.

The west (principal) elevation consists of nine bays, with a low entrance featuring Bolection moulding in the three-bay central section, flanked by balustered stair towers that are canted from the mitred angle at the second floor. The second floor has smaller 18th century windows.

The east (rear) elevation has five wide bays, with the centre and outer bays advanced at different times, showcasing crow-stepped gables; the central gable has two windows on the second floor. The inner left bay has irregular fenestration, while the inner right bay is more regular. The windows throughout feature a 12-pane glazing pattern set in timber sash and case frames, with those on the second floor having thick astragals. The house has gablehead stacks and a grey slate roof.

Inside, the house has been restored but retains many original features, highlighting the extent of its alterations. It includes a majority of original timber fittings, cornicing, overmantels, and panelling. Notable interior elements are the small vaulted chambers in the southwest corner, a large 15th century chimneypiece, an exceptional ogee-shaped overmantel of Bruce-type above the corner chimneypiece, a Renaissance panelled study with a closet, a segmental-arch kitchen recess, and stone newel staircases.
