Description

Tynefield is a late 18th century farmhouse that was enlarged and extended around 1820. It has a T-plan layout with irregular additions and a stair block at the northeast re-entrant angle, creating an L-plan. The building is constructed of rubble whinstone, roughly squared on the south elevation, with contrasting ashlar dressings. The windows on the sides and rear feature hoodmoulds, and there is an eaves course, string course, and cornice on the south side.

The south (entrance) elevation is a tall single-storey, symmetrical three-bay frontage from around 1820, leading to a gabled south wing. It has a tripartite doorway set in a segmental archway with decorative fanlights. Flanking the doorway are Venetian windows with intersecting tracery above the arched lights. The entrance features a panelled door, and there are first-floor windows and gable head stacks on the side elevations of the south block.

The north (rear) elevation includes a central two-storey wing that was raised in the late 19th century to add an attic storey, which has piend roof dormerheads facing north and west. There is a re-entrant angle to the southeast with extensions of varying dates. A single-storey lean-to runs across the north gable, forming a courtyard with lean-to outbuildings to the south, a barn to the east, and a cart and granary to the north, featuring blocked segmental arches and square granary windows. The sash and case windows have a small-pane glazing pattern, with some later additions having 4-pane and lying-pane designs. A decorative cast-iron gutter head dated 1896 is present on the side.

The south wing features plain raised skews with gable head stacks, while the north wing has a piend roof and a central stack, all covered with grey slates.

Inside, the farmhouse includes a tripartite vestibule screen, simple classical chimneypieces, panelled interior shutters, and dado in the south wing.

The retaining walls have an ashlar coped rubble parapet on the south side, where former railings have been removed, and there are cast-iron columns supporting timber gates.
