Description
The Dovecot at Dovecot Brae in Tranent, formerly dated to 1587, is a partially restored lectern dovecot located by the church outside the graveyard walls to the north. It is constructed of sandstone rubble with roughly squared dressings and features iron tie-bands. The north wall stands 30 feet high. There is a door to the south, which has been reduced in height due to the level of the ground and includes a relieving arch; above the door is a square panel that was once inscribed with the date but is now much weathered. The dovecot has a row of flight-holes at the mid-point of the roof pitch, which is covered with grey slates and has crowsteps. Originally, the interior contained 1,090 nesting boxes.
