Description
Whittingehame Mains Farmhouse is a later to late 18th century, two-storey, three-bay farmhouse that has undergone several additions over time. The building is constructed from harled red sandstone rubble with rendered ashlar dressings and features droved quoins on the wings, along with a base course. It was originally part of a steading, of which the northern and western ranges still partially exist.
On the southeast elevation, the three bays are grouped towards the center, featuring a strip fanlight above a panelled door. There are advanced single-storey outer wings, each one bay wide, added around 1900, which have tall windows on the south and side elevations. These wings originally had piend roofs, but these have recently been replaced with parapets and flat roofs.
The northeast elevation includes a large piend-roofed stairwell added to the center of the original house, with a lean-to structure to the left and an additional outbuilding further left. A two-bay, two-storey wing from the 19th century, also with a piend roof, was later connected to the western pavilion wing and projects to the north. There is a secondary piend-roofed stairwell at the center of the northern addition to the east, along with lean-to outbuildings at ground level. The sash and case windows feature a small-pane glazing pattern, with some plate-glass sashes. The roof is covered with grey slates, and the original house has coped red sandstone gable-end stacks, likely replacing earlier stacks, as well as stacks on the ridge and wallhead of the northern addition.
