Description
East Pavilion Lodge, located at Whittingehame Tower, is a pair of Baroque gate lodges dating from the early to mid 18th century, accompanied by large gatepiers. The eastern lodge has been altered, likely around 1820. The buildings are constructed from red sandstone ashlar, with later work featuring squared and snecked rubble. They have small-pane glazing patterns in the sash and case windows, and the roofs are covered with grey slates.
The west lodge remains unaltered and features a pedimented tripartite north elevation. It has fluted pilasters with ashlar bands and egg and dart capitals, architraved openings, and a central door with a segmental pediment, flanked by pedimented windows in the outer bays that have panelled aprons. The frieze includes metopes and triglyphs with varied paterae, and there are three heraldic crests above the door. The building is topped with a dentil cornice and a pediment that has an oculus at the apex, along with urn finials at the apex and end dies. The east elevation has three bays, with a fluted pilaster matching the north elevation on the right corner and a plain pilaster on the left. The central bay is recessed and features an architraved tripartite window, while the outer bays are blank. The elevation includes a frieze, moulded cornice, and blocking course, with a blank south elevation also featuring urn finials and a ridge ventilator.
The east lodge has a north elevation identical to the west lodge, but other elevations were altered when it was made L-shaped around 1820. The south elevation consists of three wide ashlar bays, with plain Doric pilasters flanking the door and at the corners. The central pedimented porch has Doric columns and a doorway set in a recessed panel. The frieze has minimal paterae, with a moulded cornice and blocking course, and urn finials only at the corners. The west elevation is made of snecked masonry, featuring two architraved windows grouped towards the south, along with an eaves band course, moulded cornice, and blocking course, topped with moulded coping on the ridge stacks. There are sections of retaining walls at right angles, adjoining the lodge at the northeast.
The gatepiers are a pair of large, square red sandstone ashlar structures in the Baroque style, each topped with an ornamented urn finial and positioned directly between the lodges. Each pier features paired attached Doric columns on the north side, with blank east and west sides. The south side has a round arched keystoned niche, adorned with a swag carved below and floral swags above, and is finished with a dentilled and moulded cornice.
