West Cottage, East Garden Cottages, Whittinghame

East Cottage, part of East Garden Cottages in Whittingehame, was built after 1871, with the west cottage predating its neighbor. This is a single-storey and attic, semi-detached pair of three-bay cottages constructed from squared, snecked, and stugged red sandstone, featuring ashlar margins.

The northeast elevation shows the west cottage set on slightly higher ground and positioned forward of its later partner. Each cottage has a centrally located doorway with a boarded door and a small-pane fanlight, flanked by windows. The inner windows have timber casements, while the outer windows feature 12-pane sash and case designs. Both cottages have gabled timber dormers with slate hanging on the sides and bipartite, small-pane casements.

The other elevations are simple and unaltered, with coped skews and skewputts. The north pitch is covered with grey-green slates, while the rear is finished with purple slates. There are small skylights and end and ridge corniced stacks.

The boundary walls are made of rubble with coping, interrupted at intervals by upright blocks, and droved, enclosing the small gardens of the cottage pair on all sides.
