Description
The Walled Garden and Gifford Gates at Whittingehame House include a summer pavilion and gates, both notable for their architectural features. The summer pavilion, dated 1905, is constructed from red sandstone ashlar and has a temple-fronted design. It features a squared, coursed rear and a distyle in antis south front, complete with piers and an elaborate cartouche in the pediment. The pavilion is topped with a leaded roof and is located at the northeast corner of the walled garden.
The Gifford Gates, situated on the eastern wall of the garden and dated 1914, consist of two-leaf gates flanked by panels and an ornate overthrow. These gates are made of wrought iron and are adorned with intricate scroll details, as well as a bell-bugle and foliage design on the overthrow. Above the quadrants, there are railings featuring a variant of the Vitruvian scroll at the top.
Additionally, the quadrant walls and gatepiers leading to the Gifford Gates are made of red brick, with deep ashlar base courses and coping. The channelled ashlar gatepiers have moulded coping, contributing to the overall elegance of the entrance.
